Halloween Photo Shoot | Spooky Sessions

Just in time for spooky season, I wanted to share some Halloween photos from a creative shoot I did a couple years ago that for one reason or another I just never got around to posting anywhere.

From time to time I like to orchestrate these little narrative shoots just to keep the creative juices flowing, because I do consider myself to be, first and foremost, an artist.

One thing portrait photographers don’t like to talk about is the difference between using your camera as a tool with which to make money, and using your camera as a tool with which to make art.

The truth is, if you have even a basic understanding of how your camera works and a mind for marketing and money management, you can create a very successful photography business. It’s not always the most knowledgable or the most creative photographers who are the most successful, it’s the ones who are business-minded.

That being said, I strive to be somewhere in the middle. On one hand, I definitely need to approach my photography from the standpoint of a business owner, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to make a living! But I also do my damnedest to continue to grow my skills as a maker of art.

This session was very different from my typical portrait sessions, but I love having opportunities to step out of my comfort zone and try something new. I am a diehard horror fan, so I took a lot of inspiration from films as I was shooting this. The subject matter is very dark, and the narrative is very much open to interpretation.

I want everyone to be able to draw their own meaning from this so I’m not going to provide much of a backstory. All I’m going to say is that I aimed to tell a tale of sacrifice, sisterhood, regret, revenge, and rebirth.
